I'm here to share with you a few tips with image samples on the different kinds of fabrics (not all fabric types), to deliver top-notch information to you so as to maximize the services i would be providing you subsequently. Shall we begin with the different types of fabrics used in dress making.
I. Silk: Silk fabric has a lustrous and glossy sheen with small slubs that run horizontally across the fabric.
II. Neoprene: Neoprene fabric is created by sandwiching a 1.6 mm layer of SBR fabric (Styrene Butadiene) in between layers of polyester spandex resulting in a 2 mm thick fabric.
III. Organza: Organza comes from the silk family. Organza can vary widely in thickness. Thin organza is sheer and somewhat flowy, but thick organza can be stiff as burlap.
IV. Acetate: Acetate fabrics are non- stretchy fabrics
that remain crisp. They drape well and have a smooth silky feel.
V. Leather: Leather is a durable and flexible material created by tanning animal raw hides, mostly cattle. Its thickness varies and could be incorporated either as a clothing in itself or an accessory.
VI. Corduroy: Corduroy is a coarse woolen cloth that absorbs water up to 65% of its own weight without dripping. It has a soft handle and good drape. This fabric isn't elastic, so it creases easily.
VII. Spandex: Otherwise known as Lycra or Elastane is a synthetic fiber known for its exceptional elasticity. This fabric varies in thickness.
VIII. Jacquard: Any fabric that has a pattern woven into the fabric rather
than printed on it is a jacquard. Brocade and Damask are types of jacquard
woven fabrics. The fabric can be made with natural or synthetic fibers.
IX. Panne: A velvet like fabric
that has been flattened to achieve a desired design or look with a soft feel to
it.
X. Blend: A term applied to a yarn or a fabric that is made up of more
than one fiber. This fabric has a coarse rather than a soft feel to it and can
easily absorb water.
